Checking Public Provident Fund (PPF) Status Online

PPF or Public Provident Fund is a public growth scheme under which people can contribute a part of their income and claim a income tax rebate. PPF scheme was introduced by the Government of India in 1968 with the aim to include more and more individuals to the scheme and get profit. Public provident fund scheme is normally of 15 years but can be extended for 1 or more terms of 5 years while the individual holds the rights to terminate the PPF funds at any time. Here I have made a small list of FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) to help you in understanding the PPF system better.

Q. How much can I invest?
Ans : Any Indian individual can invest a minimum of Rs. 500 per annum and up to a maximum of Rs.70000 per annum.

Q. What interest rate will be applied to my investment?
Ans : Indian Government awards a 8% interest rate to your investment, which gets added to your account on 31st March of every financial year. The invest amount is calculated based on the minimum amount that exists in your account between 5th March and 31st of March.
Q. What are the tax benefits?
Ans : The total interest that you accumulate from your investment on every 31st March will be completely tax free, under section 88 of IT Act. Additionally any amount that is to be credited is also fully exempted from wealth tax.

Q. Is there any loan facility?
Ans : Yes, you can take loans from your PPF account but a maximum of 25% of the total balance at the end of 1st financial year from 3rd to 6th year can be taken. You can take as many loans as you want but you need to close any active loans first.
Q. How can I withdraw money from my PPF account?
Ans : You may not withdraw any amount from your PPF amount within first 5 years. From the 6th year onwards, you can withdraw money from your account but this is limited to once per year. If your account is 15 or more years old, you can withdraw up to 60% of the balance.
Q. How to check my PPF (Public Provident Fund) account status?
Ans : You may contact your bank or post office branch to know the current status of your PPF account. If your bank provides online banking, you can request them to link your PPF account to your existing online banking account. Once they merge the accounts, you can view, check your account status and pay PPF loans online.

"Super Earth" Discovered Orbiting A Red Dwarf Star

Just 13 parsecs away, a planet astronomers are calling a "super Earth" is orbiting a dwarf star. Its radius is over twice that of Earth, and there's something very surprising in its core

Known by the designation GJ1214b, this planet is, according to a paper published yesterday in Nature, one of just two super Earths found recently. It has "a composition of primarily water enshrouded by a hydrogen–helium envelope," and its atmosphere has evolved a great deal over time (much like Earth's). Unlike another super Earth discovered recently, CoRoT-7b, this new super Earth has an atmosphere that can be studied fairly easily due to the size of its star and close proximity.
What's most intriguing is that this super Earth appears to be made up of possibly 75 percent water. Unlike Earth, which has a molten rock and metal core, GJ1214b probably has a core made of water too. (Those of you who read Iain M. Banks' novel The Algebraist are probably grinning right now.) Astronomers aren't entirely certain that the planet is water - this is just an educated guess based the planet's density, which was calculated by observing how much the red dwarf dimmed when this planet passed in front of it.

Given its distance from the dwarf, GJ1214b's surface temperature could be as much as 530 degrees Fahrenheit. On Earth, water at that temperature would boil off into steam. So it's likely that something about GJ1214b's atmosphere is keeping its oceans in an ultrahot liquid state. Basically, we've got a giant boiling ball of water - the perfect place to breed weird new life.

Popular Anti-Malware Utility SUPERAntiSpyware Gets A Free Portable Version

MalwareBytes and SUPERAntiSpyware are two effective utilities

I often use to get rid of stubborn malwares from infected computers and they have never let me down when in need, the good news

is now you can use SUPERAntiSpyware without installing it for a quick scan on target computer.

The company calls it SUPERAntiSpyware Online Safe Scan but actually it's more like a full-blown 9.35 MB portable download which requires no installation and leaves no traces behind, the good thing is it can be updated so you can have it with you on your portable drive for immediate rescue.
I would love to have an official portable version of MalwareBytes along with SUPERAntiSpyware on my pen-drive, hope the developers are listening to the demand of competition as we now have SUPERAntiSpyware Online Scanner/Portable Utility.

First leaked screenshots of Samsung Bada OS

Soon after the official Samsung Bada OS presentation last week, the first screenshots made their way online. The new OS is a definite looker and you can really tell it’s based on Samsung’s current non-smartphone TouchWiz UI.

Now here’s a another set of screenshots…

I can’t stop seeing this as a colorful cocktail of TouchWiz, Android and a pinch of Symbian, but hey that’s just me.

It will be a lot of time before we see a working Bada smartphone, but Samsung will surely enter the fray with a nice set of wheels.

Viewsonic VNB102 Viewbook or how I broke two of my top buying rules

I broke two of my own rules today when I got myself a new ultra cheap netbook. It’s a viewbook actually or at least that’s what Viewsonic is calling their VNB102. But whatever Marketing is naming it, it’s a plain netbook that’s hardly exciting enough to write home about. Yet I’m writing about it here as it made me break my two top buying rules.

My first rule is that when buying new tech stuff, I take the care to research the item carefully – to get as much user input on it. Well, in the case of the Viewsonic VNB102 I went straight ahead and bought it without even checking the full specs. Cause it was so damn cheap.

My second buying rule is that I should always try and buy stuff from brands that have a wider user base as it’s always easier to find help online when you have a problem later on. And with a wider user base there are always a bunch of tutorials flying around about how you can mod your device to make it better. Anyways, I totally neglected that when I went for the VNB102 as that’s Viewsonic’s first netbook. Why I did that? Cause it was so damn cheap.

Since Viewsonic announced their VNB102 only two days ago, there are hardly any live photos of the device online, so I decided I’ll go ahead and post some along with my first impressions. Not that I believe anyone will research the thing seriously, but it’s a nice netbook in its own right and it deserves a proper presence on the net.

The only thing missing in it are the available battery options. The Viewsonic VNB102 will ship in either 3-cell (2200 mAh) or 6-cell (4200 mAh) Li-Ion battery. The 3-cell battery is supposed to give you 2-3 hours of uptime, while the heavier 6-cell battery should double that. So far I don’t have any real life impression on the battery performance. I haven’t even charged it a single time yet.

The Viewsonic VNB102 packs a 10.1-inch LCD display with the common resolution of 1024×600 pixels. A thing you won’t find the manual is that the screen is actually glossy. I prefer glossy screens actually, so it came as a bonus for me.

Several interesting points

The retail contents are quite modest – there’s no carrying pouch, no disc with drivers (you don’t need any under Win7) or a recovery disc. But there’s a recovery partition on the hard drive that you can hopefully use to restore the OS to its sparkling new state if you mess things up. I guess I’ll be deleting that partition as ASAP.

The user manual goes ahead to point out a couple of interesting points. First off, the 160GB HDD supposedly has a shock-proof design. Since it’s not an SSD, i guess the only way they might have achieved that is with a free-fall sensor. But they don’t mention one on their specs sheet, so I wouldn’t count on the manual being correct.

And secondly, the RAM (1GB by default) is not user upgradeable as it’s obviously soldered directly to the motherboard. Well, as you’ll see it’s not. You can upgrade your Viewsonic VNB102 to up to 2GB and it won’t void your warranty. It’s just that you have to throw away your old SO-DIMM (that’s the RAM stick) as there’s only one slot.

VNB102 has its drawbacks too

A downer that you won’t notice at first sight is that the touchpad doesn’t have any gesture support – no two-finger scrolling, pinching, swiping or whatever. I guess I’ll find a way to add that via some third-party application, but it’s not there by default – at least not under the genuine Windows 7 Starter edition it came with. There’s simply no trackpad management software preinstalled.

And secondly, you can’t adjust the amount of RAM allocated to the VGA in the BIOS.

And finally…

Well, that’s about it. Enjoy the shots of the Viewsonic VNB102 and let me know in the comments if you have any questions about it.

How Google Detects Invalid Clicks

We always hear that Google has a sophisticated system to detect the invalid clicks, and result in termination of the cheaters’ account. But, how can Google do that? In this post, I summarize those ways that Google depends on to detect whether the clicks on your site are invalid or not. Google will not first ban your account immediately. Rather, they will first flag your account and Google will keep a closer eye to your account. In some occasion, they may send you a warning letter to notify your situation; but sometimes not.

1. IP Address
It is the easiest and must be recognized by everyone. If those clicks on your ads are originated from the same IP Address as the one used for accessing your AdSense account, your account is flagged.

2. Click Through Rate (CTR)
Normally, Click through Rate should not exceed 10%. Otherwise, Google will flag your account. For your information, normal CTR should ranges from 0.5% – 10%.

3. Physical Location
Google has good tracing software and technology. They can trace traffics origin down to the small town. So, using different computers with different IP address does not secure anything. So, don’t try to click your ads in various internet cafes. That will kill you.

4. Cookies
Most home users do not use static IP Address for Internet connection. In most cases just disconnect and reconnect will give you a new IP Address. But don’t forget, Google has set cookies on your computer. They can trace these cookies and see whether they originate from the same computer.

5. Click Pattern 1
It is also suspicious when people click on their clicks and then run away immediately (hit-and-run). But normally, people will surf for a while inside your pages and then click on the ads they want.

6. Click Pattern 2
Why this computer / IP address / person is so trigger-click-happy on this particular website but never click on the ads on other sites?

7. Click Pattern 3
And why is it that people accessing these sites direct (type-in URL or from bookmark) tend to be very active ad-clickers compared with those referred from search engine or other sites?

8.Other Google Services
Apart from Google Adsense, Google also provide a series of services to us. Don’t just think that it is safe if you do not log in your adsense account and click on your ads. What other Google services do they provide to us? Here are some: Gmail (most people are using it), Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Search, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Sitemap, Google Desktop, Blogger, or even Youtube (because Google has just recently acquired it).

10. Search Engine Ranking
Your website is not indexed on any search engine, not linked by any prominent website, but get consistently high traffic? How come people can access your website and click your ads? That will make Google to smell a rat.

11. Design Of Webpage
How about the “Please click a link below” or “donate us by clicking the ads”? These kinds of encouragement is not in line with Google’s TOS. Google can use their winning search engine, or even human eyes to check your sites from time to time.

12. Advertisers conversion rate
Ad click is one thing. But does it bring value to the advertisers? If none of the clicks on your site translate to conversion to the advertiser, you are in trouble. First the Smart-Pricing hits, then your AdSense account disabled

So be careful before clicking your own ads and thus cheating Google as well as their loyal advertisers

WHAT'S NEW IN KASPERSKY INTERNET SECURITY 2010:

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 is a comprehensive data protection tool, which provides not only anti-virus protection but also protection against spam and network attacks. The application's components also enable users to protect their computers against currently unknown threats and phishing, and to restrict users' access to the Internet. The multifaceted protection covers all channels for data transfer and exchange. All components can be flexibly configured, allowing users to tailor Kaspersky Internet Security to their specific needs.

New in protection:

* Improved HIPS (Host-based Intrusion Prevention System) technology assigns a danger rating to unknown programs. The Application Control component uses HIPS to define rules for new and already known applications, which may restrict their access to the file and operating systems.

* Innovative Sandbox technology has been implemented, which uses virtualization to create a secure environment for program execution. New software can be tested in this environment, which isolates the host operating system from all changes. There is no limit to the number of Internet browsers and other applications which can run simultaneously in a sandbox.

* Increased use of Kaspersky Security Network considerably decreases the threat response time, due to information received from other users. The service aims to minimize the time necessary to detect and neutralize new types of threats. When a user starts a program, the service checks it against white lists and Urgent Detection System lists on Kaspersky Lab's servers.

* The protection of personal user data has been extended and enhanced. For instance, Kaspersky Internet Security automatically prevents inadvertent users from accessing known phishing web sites, and blocks keylogger programs, which are designed to steal passwords and access codes.

* The new Script Emulator analyzes the behavior of scripts, to assess their potential harmfulness. It simulates the operation of the Java Script and Visual Basic Script engines, which are supported by default in Microsoft Internet Explorer and are built in to Microsoft Windows.

* The new IM Anti-Virus component ensures the safe operation of most instant messaging applications. The component scans messages for the presence of malicious objects.

* Improvements to the Virtual keyboard component provide safer entry of personal information, by protecting data from being intercepted by spyware and preventing screenshot capture.

* Significant improvements to the Anti-Spam component now provide two methods for detecting spam: exact and expert. Exact methods apply strict filtering criteria to a message, which determine unambiguously whether or not a message is spam. Expert methods investigate email messages that have passed strict filtering criteria. As such messages cannot be unambiguously considered spam, the component calculates the probability that they are spam.

* Components of Kaspersky Internet Security can be temporarily disabled, to improve computer performance. This can be useful during the use of resource-hungry applications such as network games.

* Monitoring access to phishing websites and protection against phishing attacks are performed by scanning links in messages and on web pages, and also by using the database of phishing addresses when an attempt to access websites is detected. You can check whether a web address is included in the phishing database, using the Web Anti-Virus, IM Anti-Virus or Anti-Spam component.

* Improvements have been made to all the application's existing components, including the Firewall, Parental Control, and Anti-Spam components, and particularly the Heuristic analyzer.

* The anti-virus kernel of Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 has been significantly improved, to provide more efficient malware detection. The application shows higher performance on Windows Vista operating systems, as compared to previous versions of Kaspersky Internet Security.

* Kaspersky Internet Security includes the URL scanning module managed by Web Anti-Virus. This module scans links on the web page, comparing the website addresses against its database of suspicious and phishing websites. This module is provided for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers as a plug-in.

* The update procedure has been improved. Kaspersky Internet Security's databases are now updated not only according to their schedule, but also when new security threats appear.

* The creation of Rescue Disks has been improved. The service should be used when the infection reaches a level at which the computer cannot be disinfected using either anti-virus applications, or malware removal utilities such as Kaspersky AVPTool. The improved Rescue Disks provide more efficient disinfection because malware programs do not gain control when the operating system is being loaded.

New in the application interface:

* The application interface has been completely redesigned, to make Kaspersky Internet Security significantly more accessible to first-time users.

* Kaspersky Internet Security features an automatic mode in which the application automatically makes optimal decisions, so avoiding excessive requests to the user.

Samsung S5560 preview: First look

Ah, the futuristic appeal of touchscreens - consumers can't get enough of them. Enter the Samsung S5560. With a 5MP camera and Wi-Fi, it's two widgets ahead of the competition. The rest mostly follows the recipe for success from the S5230 Star cookbook, with a few tweaks to bring it up to speed.

The Samsung S5560 lacks 3G connectivity but comes with Wi-Fi connectivity. It's hardly the solution that most carriers opt for (and carriers ARE the biggest cellphone contractors), but we guess Samsung have gone for pleasing the end client this time. In an effort to keep the price down, trading 3G for Wi-Fi is a compromise many users would make.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves, check out the rundown of the Samsung S5560 features:

Samsung S5560 (a.k.a Marvel) at a glance:

General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Form factor: Touchscreen bar

Dimensions: 107.5 x 52 x 13.2 mm, 95g

Display: 3.0 inch WQVGA TFT resistive touchscreen, 240 x 400 pixels

Platform: Latest TouchWiz 2.0 UI, Smart Unlock

Memory: 78MB integrated memory, hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 16GB)

Camera: 5 megapixel auto focus camera with LED flash, image stabilization, WDR, face detection, Smile Shot, blink detection and QVGA video recording at 15 fps

Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, standard microUSB port, 3.5mm audio jack

Misc: Accelerometer for screen auto rotate and turn-to-mute, FM radio with RDS

Battery: 960 mAh battery

This phone is clearly a Samsung Jet wannabe - the styling, the camera, the Wi-Fi connectivity all make it a cheaper alternative to the Jet. Sure, tradeoffs have been made for the sake of a lower price, but if you've never owned a touch phone before, the S5560 makes a great introduction.
The timer on non-touch operated phones seems to be running down - touch phones seem to get the best features and the most hype. This makes it harder and harder to say no, especially now that their price is no longer prohibitive.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness is available, has concierge service

Just in time for the holidays, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness is available in stores. And apparently it's got a concierge service, you know, like that thing Vertu phones have. So, you get a transparent screen (a novelty) and a concierge service all for less money than a Vertu.

Going through the list of specs you'll spot groundbreaking features of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness like "Video streaming & viewing". Yes, video streaming on a 1.8" monochrome display.

We're not bashing the Pureness - it's a bold move by Sony Ericsson, kudos for that. But that's not a feature they should promote. More interesting is that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness comes with a concierge service - not bad, considering the concierge bit is usually reserved for phones with diamonds on them.

Still, the specs on the XPERIA Pureness may seem a little limited, but that was Sony Ericsson's intention all along. They say, they've stripped away the unnecessary things from both form and function and left only the essential phone functions (hence "Pureness").

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness comes with a 12-month membership in the Pureness concierge service. The service is available 24/7 via phone or email and it can get you perks like room upgrades in hotels, a VIP welcome, free champagne, macaroons, discounts, tickets with better seating and so on.

Sony Ericsson have set up a dedicated microsite to promote the Pureness concierge service. The service is country dependent, so make sure to read the benefits list to see what they have to offer for your locale.

As for the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness the phone, it costs 990 US dollars (676 euro) and it can be shipped to a long list of countries.

Sony considered SSD, network storage for PS3 Slim

Could the PS3 Slim have been even slimmer? It could have, according to Sony's Masayuki Chatani, but it would've cost you. That word comes from a wide-ranging interview Chatani gave to Tech-On!, in which he revealed (seemingly for the first time) that Sony had considered using SSD drives or even network storage to further reduce the size of the console. SSD drives were ultimately rejected, as you might have guessed, due to cost reasons, and Chatani says that network storage ultimately proved to still be simply too impractical for a game console. He also said that the PS3 could have been made slimmer if Sony had just left the power supply on the outside, but that would have "imposed restrictions on transport and use, making it harder to use freely." Not a whole lot in the way of big revelations otherwise, but you can check out the complete interview at the links below.

3D camera breaks world record with 158 lenses

Sure, there are viable commercial options for taking photos in three dimensions, but if you really want to capture 3D images (and you happen to be attached to a major university) you can always go the route of Associate Professor Ishino Youzirou and company. The camera that they developed at the Nagoya Institute of Technology sports 158 lenses arranged on an 18.5-inch aluminum arc frame. The school's combustion engineers will use it to study irregular flames -- all the while content in the knowledge that they've entered the Guinness Book of World Records for building the camera with the most lenses. This is certainly safer than Youzirou's other attempt to enter the Guinness book, Most Live Rattlesnakes Held in the Mouth (the record for that, by the way, is ten).

Android 2.1 ported to Droid, no one feigns surprise

You had to know this was coming. That Android 2.1 OS that's been circulating inside the Google's ultra-exclusive Nexus One has hit the internet, and thanks to some clever hackery, you can now theoretically put the update on your Droid handset. We say theoretically, of course, because it's not quite a perfect rip. DIY instructions were briefly posted on Sholes.info but have since been replaced with a curt advisory to wait for a ROM that properly preserves file system permissions, else risking some serious breaking. The original image file is still available, but don't say we didn't warn you. Separately and perhaps unrelated, a video has surfaced of the Nexus One's boot animation running on Droid -- feel free to enjoy that instead, after the break.
